Add products

Once you have created a widget you are ready to add your first product. Watch the video below to see how it works.

  1. Log in to the ShowSpace backend.
  2. Make sure you have created at least one widget.
You need at least one widget before you can create a product. See our Knowledge Base article on how to create a widget.
  3. Click on "Add some products to your widget" in the getting started list
to get to the form to create a new product.
  4. Select the widget you want to create a product for.
The first field of the form will determine which widget the new product should be displayed in. If you created only one widget yet, this value will be prefilled and you cannot change it. If you created more than one widget, you can select a widget here.
  5. Fill in a product URL into the URL field.
This will trigger ShowSpace to go and try to fetch as much information from that URL as possible.
  6. Enter a product description.
This is not required but a short description will work great to get your visitors to click on your product.
  7. Select the images for this product.
The images which were fetched from the product URL are displayed below the product description. Initially they are grayed out which means that they would not be saved if you created the product now. You have to click on each image that you want to save for this product. Don't hesitate to save multiple images per product, it will help getting more visitors to click on your products.
  8. Select the main image.
The first image in the list will become the main image of the product and this is what your visitors will look at first, so it should be the best looking image. Drag the products around with the mouse to change the image order.
  9. Click on "Create".
This will create the product and send you back to your product list if it was created successfully.

Product Concepts

Read on to learn about the basic concepts of how ShowSpace handles products:

Products URLs

A product in ShowSpace is uniquely identified by its URL, which is the URL of the webpage where a visitor can get more information about the product and buy it. Almost all products on the web have this unique URL that displays information just about this specific product.

The product URL is the most important bit of information you need to enter the product. It is used by ShowSpace to determine if this product already exists in the database and to automatically fetch product information (such as the product name, images and price).

Fetching product information

To make it easier for you to enter products, ShowSpace will do its best to fetch as much information as possible from the product URL. This is done automatically as you enter new products or can be initiated manually when you edit existing products.

For some merchants ShowSpace will fetch a lot of product information (i.e., name, price, currency) and for some less. This is dependent on whether ShowSpace can use the merchant's API, which only big merchants like Amazon or eBay offer.

One important piece of product information that will always be fetched are the product images. Once you enter a product URL, ShowSpace will scan the page for all images and display them to you. You can then click on those images which are real product images to select them to be saved along with the product. This is necessary since all images from the product URL will be fetched, so some might be the logo of the merchant, background images of the website or images of related products, which you wouldn't want to save with the product.
